The Windows 7 Experience by 09154137756

When the Windows 7 official beta ISO got leaked to the torrents at the beginning of this year, it became the most downloaded file on the Net, mostly because of first-hand accounts regarding the impressive changes the new version has over Vista. I was looking for a new OS at that time, and I almost ended up installing Win7 instead of Vista, if it wasn’t for the fact that I’m not too keen on downloading torrents, and the BETA watermark written all over it is more than enough reason to dissuade me, even though everybody else claims that the beta was stable enough to be used as an everyday OS.

Internet Explorer 8: Now Available by 09154137756

IE8 is now out of betas and RC so just in case you haven’t upgraded (particularly if you’re still using IE6, gawd, it utterly confounds me that many are still using an antiquated version. Come on, IE6 has been around since Windows 98 and that exists for something like 11 years ago? Anyway, to check your version of IE, if you’re not at ease with clicking Help > About, you can simply check the e icon and if it’s a dull blue color, no yellowish Saturn-like ring, then chances are, you’re using IE6). Now is the time to go to IE Main Page and download the installer.

I’ve been using IE8 since the first beta and it’s safe to say that Microsoft has put a lot of improvements in the web browser. IE8 has now passed Acid2 and it has also improved on its security. There has also been many original features included in the browser, such as web accelerators, web slices, visual search suggestions, inPrivate browsing and many more.

In fact, I’ve been testing IE8 on Windows7 and I think that IE8 was actually faster than FF, Chrome or Safari 4.

Free Browsing [Update] by 09154137756

I tried browsing again today on zero load and much to my delight, my phone’s net connection has both local and Internet connection:

I was able to update my antivirus software and even scrobble my Last.fm cache. Anyway, I didn’t do anything special to my GPRS settings, I’m using iNet using a proxy. I have no idea regarding the mechanics of free browsing, but to contribute something useful, I’m going to state some of my observations and also formulated the following pointers:

  • All of the FB sessions happened at night, at around 8pm to 11pm. I tried connecting at various times of the day, but it seemed it only happened between those times. Also, on one instance, the FB disconnected at around 12 midnight
  • Successful FB is a matter of luck, but to avoid any complications, it’s better to connect on zero load. Hell, if you have a spare Globe SIM, you can use this specifically for browsing. Then, try and try until you succeed.
  • You can still browse some sites even when FB is not activated, including G-Blogs, Globe Corporate site, myGlobe, myGlobe Forums and Pixlink. Yahoo Mobile used to be browseable as well, but I can’t open the pages for a few months now [EDIT: ummm, apparently Yahoo Mobile is still browseable, I didn’t realize I was inputting the wrong address, it’s http://ph.m.yahoo.com/, not mobi.yahoo.com.ph or m.yahoo.com.ph
  • I think you can only do FB using a desktop-class browser, such as Opera (Mobile or Mini) and some other browsers out there.

Browser Wars by 09154137756

In a few years, the Internet had became the primary application of computing, fueled by the need to get connected with the rest of the computing world. For the myriad programs that anyone can use to access the net, no other program can match the overall functionality of web browsers, and that is why there has been an intense competition among browsers out there.

Go Open Source! by 09154137756

One of the major benefits of having an Internet connection is gaining access to a vast repository of files for everyday consumption. Media, computer programs and documents can be readily obtained through different means, such as straightforward downloading, P2P and torrent. However, in recent years, this has also brought up rampant illegal distribution of copyrighted materials. Just typing in the name of the program from your favorite search engine yields websites where you can download commercial software at absolutely no cost, but at the expense of leaving behind “Thank you for visiting our site” souvenirs that can compromise your security, causes instability in your system and fill your system with annoying crap and worthless junk. It is basically a matter of accepting more serious annoyances in exchange for a small piece of convenience.
